Upcoming Reading

A note on the list that followsThe busy bees behind the shopfront have compiled this list according to some set criteria, one of which is that the book must be easily available, either via the library, as a free download, or at a reasonable price either online or locally.  We've included links etc to help you 'lay-hand-on-book'. Here's the key:
# = available at library (BCCL if not otherwise specified)

* = available as a free digital download
$ = available at a reasonable price either online or locally

We've some fantastic reads ahead again for 2016 and 2017, making our club a delicious mix of fun and learning:

Brave New World - Aldous Huxley
Far in the future, the World Controllers have created the ideal society. Through clever use of genetic engineering, brainwashing and recreational sex and drugs, all its members are happy consumers. Bernard Marx seems alone harbouring an ill-defined longing to break free. A visit to one of the few remaining Savage Reservations, where the old, imperfect life still continues, may be the cure for his distress...

Huxley's ingenious fantasy of the future sheds a blazing light on the present and is considered to be his most enduring masterpiece. #

Anne Of Green Gables - LM Montgomery
Everyone's favorite redhead, the spunky Anne Shirley, begins her adventures at Green Gables, a farm outside Avonlea, Prince Edward Island. When the freckled girl realizes that the elderly Cuthberts wanted to adopt a boy instead, she begins to try to win them and, consequently, the reader, over. #

Chalktown - Melinda Haynes
From the acclaimed author of Mother of Pearl comes the story of Chalktown, an eerily quiet village in George County, Mississippi, where folks communicate with one another solely through chalkboards hanging from their front porches. Sixteen-year-old Hezekiah Sheehand lives down the road with his reckless sister, Arena, his mentally disabled younger brother, Yellababy, and their often cruel mother, Susan-Blair, whose husband has abandoned the family. The mystery of Chalktown calls to Hez, and one day he sets out with Yellababy strapped to his back, determined to divine the key to the chalk. Meanwhile, his family confronts a tragedy that just might pave an unexpected road toward a hopeful future. #
